PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY BEFORE PURCHASING YOUR CAVALIER.
Before you buy an adorable puppy that "makes your heart hurt" it's so cute, take time to first make a prudent and wise
decision. You have heard the expression, "Act in haste; repent in leisure". This is not the time to act in haste.
Be forewarned so that you can be forearmed. Do your homework before you buy or you may end up buying a puppy that
will have all sorts of health problems and you may spend thousands of dollars trying to make it well. Remember
these dogs could live to be in their teens and hopefully will live to be in their teens if they have come from
healthy breeding stock. Even after having done all the testing, we still have those bad recessive genes that pop
up every now and then. But you increase your odds of having a healthier puppy if you have them come from healthy
parents. Anything worth while is worth waiting on. In the meantime, talk with different breeders and see their dogs.
Visit their homes and see if you are ready to take the plunge. You will learn something different from everyone you
talk with. You will discover which color and sex you want the most. You will decide on the breeders "type".
Some breeders raise whole colors like the black and tan and ruby. Some raise the parti-colors like the tri and
the blenheim. You will see the various sizes and bone structures the breeders raise. Some have more coat than others.
Some have better temperaments than others. And unfortunately, some are just down right ugly...
Do you know what the difference is between a puppy mill, a backyard breeder or a reputable breeder? A puppy mill
breeds all kinds of dogs, without doing any health testing. They leave the dogs in cages all the time with little
if any human contact. They don't have any time to socialize the puppies and they sell them to pet stores at wholesale
prices. That is why you need to have any dog you give away or sell, spayed or neutered first. Unscrupulous individuals
disguise themselves as loving caring people who want to take that unwanted registered dog off of your hands and then
they sell them to puppy mills where they are bred to death. Some don't care if they have papers.
A backyard breeder is someone who bought a dog and breeds it to another dog without knowing the breed standard and
showing the dog. They haven't done any health screening. All they are thinking about is the money--not the quality
of the puppies. Most don't have a clue about what they are doing. They may breed a dog with a horrible under bite
to another dog with an over bite. They just don't care as long as you give them the money.
A reputable breeder wants to meet you in person. They want references and they genuinely care about the welfare
of their puppies. They want to make sure the puppies they raise are going to a safe, happy, loving environment.
A puppy miller doesn't care who they sell their puppies to. They mass produce. A reputable breeder wants you to
see the parents of the puppy or at least a photo of the stud if the dam was shipped to a stud. They have clean
premises and the dogs are healthy and happy tail waggers. Look at their tails and see if they are wagging or are
they tucked between their tails. Cavaliers are usually very friendly and happy to lick you to death. They aren't
supposed to be shy or timid. A shy dog can become a biter out of fear.
Don't agree to meet someone at a show or any place else unless you have first met the breeder in person, seen
the health certificates on the parents and met the puppies in person as well as the dam and sire. It could be
that the breeder doesn't want you to see their kennel because they are trying to hide something. Don't buy the,
"I am going to be at a show near you, come see the puppy there." There are champions that come out of deplorable
settings. Maybe they have too many dogs kept in cages all the time. Some show breeders keep their dogs in crates
nearly all the time to kept their dogs immaculate. This isn't natural and good for a dog. They need to have good
muscle tone and have the pleasure of being a dog every now and then. Finally, a caring breeder always tests their
breeding stock. Yes, it's a pain in the wazoo. Yes, it takes time to go to a university. But if you breed, you owe
it to the buyer and to the welfare of the breed to do health screening.

Health certificates
Any vet can give an 8 week old puppy a Health Certificate. All this means is that he has examined the
puppy and it has had some of the shots it is supposed to have and that was healthy the day it was in his
office. He hasn't done any genetic tests. You need to have documented evidence that the puppy you have
fallen in love with came out of a sire and dam that have been screened by a board certified ophthalmologist
and a board certified cardiologist. Ask to see the health certificates before you buy. MVD (mitral valve disorder)
usually doesn't appear before the age of two. There is a 1 year pet lemon law in Florida that requires you to have
a health certificate for resale.
Registration papers
Did you know that registrations don't necessarily mean anything? Even puppy mills have there own registration
and oftentimes their dogs are AKC registered? They can also be forged by unscrupulous breeders. Make sure you
get informed about the different types of registration papers before you buy. AKC and CKCSC are the better
registrations. Be sure to visit the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Club for further information at http://www.ckcsc.org.
Check to see if your breeder is listed on their site or has been expelled.
I hope this has been helpful information. I look forward to hearing from you.
